My professional history (the short version)

After studying marketing, psychology and English several years ago, I began my marketing career in the fast-paced advertising agency world.

I was quickly promoted to Marketing Director, and I soon began hosting workshops and teaching owners how to build their own businesses. That was two decades ago. I’ve been working as a marketing consultant, strategist and writer in your industry ever since.

I worked across industry in tech, food and fashion, but my passion took me in the direction of property, where I’ve been fortunate to work with incredible interior designers, furniture makers, green building contractors, property companies and start-ups ever since.

I’ve consulted and written for a few well-known brands in the built environment too, including NHBC, Persimmon, TDS, Saint Gobain, Bisley and more. You can see a few past testimonials here: Reviews

Alongside my copywriting and consulting work, I also co-created and managed one of the UK’s first coworking spaces for ten years, set up my own marketing agency, and built on my studies with further qualifications in behaviour, marketing, interior design and well construction. How much do I know about marketing and business growth?

OK, let’s tackle the ‘does she have the experience and expertise to help me grow my business?’ question first.

The very short answer to that question is, yes, I do.

I’ve been advising clients on marketing and communications for 20 years – I haven’t just got into this game off the back of a viral post.

Academically, I’ve studied business psychology and business at university, a postgrad marketing qualification, a second psychology and behaviour degree and various professional accreditations in content marketing, digital marketing and inbound marketing.

In the real world, I’ve advised more businesses than I can recount, I’ve written thousands of articles and hundreds of websites, I’ve taught over 100 people how to write and grow their business, and I’ve worked as a marketing manager, marketing director, marketing coach, senior copywriter, content strategist and more during my career.

What do I know about running a small business?

I set up my first business in my late 20s. What I lacked in knowledge and experience back then was made up for in drive, determination and confidence.

It’s interesting how those two things switched places as I became older.

I inevitably made mistakes along the way, learnt quickly and spent time building my knowledge to fill in the gaps on how to make my business work.

Each challenge has brought with it the opportunity to refine what I’m doing and make improvements. That alone has been one of my greatest teachers.

Most importantly, I’ve worked alongside hundreds of entrepreneurs, freelancers and business owners over the years.

In 2009, I jointly set up one of the UK’s first and longest-running coworking spaces.

We created the workspace for freelancers and small business owners to give them a place to connect and escape to. For 10 years, we helped with their business growth, mental health, productivity and enjoyment.

The stories and experiences we shared with those business owners have been instrumental in the advice I give to others today.

How many businesses have I helped?

I’ve helped over 100 business owners directly. That doesn’t include the hundreds I’ve advised in group sessions, workshops and articles.

My client relationships last for a long time (often for years) as I accompany them along different stages of business growth.

Those owners have been start-ups, sole traders, SMEs and managers/directors in larger companies. It’s been a real variety.

I’ve helped them with everything from their long-term growth plans and marketing strategies to their content plans, social media, positioning, pricing, tone of voice and copywriting.

I’ve also guided them on their recruitment, sales approach, funding, awards, events, PR, HR, onboarding and accounting – anything they’ve needed a sounding board for.

The trust and relationships that come from working together always leads to me becoming their personal coach, confidant, advisor or friend.

What do I know about interiors, architecture, property and construction?

Ever since I was young, I’ve been obsessed with floorplans, interiors and furnishings (I used to go through the property section of the papers to re-imagine and redesign each of the houses for sale). You can imagine how pleased I was to be featured on a full-page spread in the property section of The Times a few years later for my interior decor.

My professional interest in all things ‘property’ began when I went on a house building course with the NHBC. I was working as their marketing manager and lead copywriter, and needed to become familiar with residential design, construction, planning and standards.

From the moment I put on that hard hat and stepped into the half-built housing development, I was hooked.

15 years later, I finally took my passion further and studied interior design at KLC and also achieved the WELL building standard accreditation in 2022.

Over the years, I’ve worked with big names in construction, development and tenancy. What I’ve really loved, though, is working with small interior designers, architecture practices, furniture makers, specifiers, builders and developers. I am absolutely driven to help businesses in this industry grow.

What makes my business coaching different?

Every business advisor is different because of the person they are. It’s not just about what a business coach knows, it’s how well you click with them.

When choosing a business coach, it’s important you feel inspired, motivated, heard, understood and supported by them, which is why I offer a free introductory session.

My experience and strengths lie in communications, content, marketing, copywriting, small business growth, psychology, behaviour and wellness in the built environment.

I know the interiors, building and property industry and have been working with companies in the sector for over two decades. I understand your audiences, your media and the work involved in what you do.

What do I know about mindset?

Whilst I’ve studied psychology, behaviour and business, it’s the real-world experience that has taught me the most about business mindset.

Over the years I’ve worked with many different people, at different stages of business, with different pressures, personalities and needs. Even with all those differences, the same themes emerge  – and they are all about mindset.

We all experience similar mental blocks. From imposter syndrome and feelings of doubt to decision paralysis, lack of motivation, exhaustion, overwhelm, loneliness and fear.

Even the most outwardly confident people need to overcome personal hurdles that hinder their business success.

I’ve experienced that first-hand through my own journey too. The work I’ve done on myself, with the help of mentors, coaches and teachers, means I truly understand what’s involved in making change to succeed.

What is ‘WELL’ and how can it help you?

A someone who works in the built environment, you may have heard of the WELL standard. If not, read this: What is WELL?

Its aim is to help the industry develop spaces that enhance human health and wellbeing.

As a WELL AP, I’m qualified to work alongside developers, interior designers and architects to ensure the space meets the requirements of each feature in the standard. If you’re working with a client keen to achieve WELL certification on their building, I can help.

But that’s not how I use it in coaching to help with business growth.

I apply the principles of WELL to help you to enhance your workspace and boost your wellness to succeed in business.

Together, we look at how your work environment (even if you’re working at the kitchen table or on your sofa), is holding you back in your career.

From the light, air, thermal comfort and acoustics in your space to your day-to-day habits, nourishment, movement, mind and connection, I’ll help you to make improvements that will transform your productivity, creativity, motivation, health and wellbeing.

The best thing about this advice is that you can share what you learn with your clients too.

How can I help you?

I’ve been a high-level marketing strategist, small business advisor, writer and trainer for over 20 years now. I don’t just talk the talk (or write the words) – I can show you what to do, where to be and how to say it.

I can show you how to use words, channels, marketing strategy and clever online tactics to increase your turnover, income and time, in a step-by-step way that feels comfortable and enjoyable.

I can help you find the confidence and mindset to win work, clients, coverage and awards.

I’ll show you how to navigate difficult challenges, encourage you when you’ve lost motivation and keep you achieving each essential milestone.

I’ll help you to take a step back and see what’s hindering and helping your progress, mentally and physically.

And, I’ll be there for you whenever you need an answer, sounding board or help with making decisions in business.
